Still on the upper deck my lovely husband built, you also look down at the bed in front of the fountain. Here you can see the weeping willow, skimmia, pachysandra and some of the yucca offshoots I divided last year. Not sure if they're going to make it. I think the dogs have been sitting on them, too.
Still looking east, but along the fence line running the length of the south side of the yard. The grass looks deceptively lush but is still quite soggy. Note the dead mass of Hebe in the foreground. I'm pretty sure that's a goner, despite suggestions to give it a year. Who has that kind of patience?
Step back a bit more, looking south, and you really see how this garden strip lacks filling. The arborvitae drop quite a few needles and the dogs charge over to the fence to "greet" the neighbor's dogs. All this makes it challenging for planting. Right now the space includes dead or dying Hebe, white flowering currant, redtwig dogwoods, spirea, azalea, climbing camellia and Mexican orange.
On the deck and looking northwest at the woodland garden. It's really bare now but I've started placing some ferns and salal. I'm leaving them in their pots until I decide whether I like them there. However, it's already clear they're lost against the mulch so this area will definitely need plants to brighten it up.
Finally, on the deck looking west at the catwalk border and the upper deck. If you recall, this is where the great bulb bonanza took place. They're filling in a bit but the bed needs a lot more work. The fountain also is screaming for more plants, maybe some canna or crocosmia for pops of color.
Well, there's the naked truth on our little backyard. Pretty bare right now but it will fill in. I also like to think I have plenty of space to buy more plants. So do you have a few areas that need filling? Care to share some of your naked truths?

I love your deck area. That fountain bed will look fabulous with some Cannas in vibrant colors. I'm kind of waiting to see how much bare space I have actually once some of the perennials start filling in.
Hi~~ I have (or should I say HAD) several Hebe casualties as well. I yanked all of them with no guilt whatsoever. I don't want to look at ugly and I've got a lot of possible replacements. Oh and by the way, don't use the word "sparce" to describe your yard. People here don't like that word. LOL !!! I used this infamous word to describe my backyard and let's just say I got a lot of feedback. All good, of course but I learned my lesson nonetheless. :)
Your yard looks rather well. Just a little filling in here and there. It won't be long and we'll all have our yards full or enough to keep us busy on those hot summer days. Have a good weekend.
Love the shots! Your yard looks great!
Your hubby did a great job on the deck...it is good looking. We garden is such different environments that lots of what I grow might not be happy in your garden, si I do look forward to seeing what you add or subtract...the nurseries are opening ...you will be adding! gail
It looks great! Not sparse at all. I love your fountain area! I don't have patience to wait to see if plants will come back either. Did you find anything today? We were out running errands when you called. Hope you had fun and found lots!
The deck is great and I love all the different areas of your yard. We have very good luck with crocosmia here in GA - it is such a bright, cheerful flower.
Hope you have a good weekend.
Your garden looks lovely and spacious with nice aspects. It must be exciting to have room to think of new ideas and planting plans! I always love designing flower beds and mapping out the edges with stones and twigs to see how they'll look, before cutting them out.
Alas - I have no space in my garden - if I cut any more flower beds out of the lawn it would look bitty. I'll just have to be content with more containers!
Love your far away shots - fun to see your space and it gvies me lots of ideas! Thanks for sharing, Paula in Idaho
I don't have the patience to wait a year to see if something's alive either, but I'm thinking this year of finding an out of the way space to just plant test stuff and charity cases to see what happens, with no expectation that it'll look good. That way I'll know whether or not I should even try.
Melanthia, your garden has great "bones" and that's the most important factor..INHO. I love your new deck too! Will you grow a vine on the arbor over the upper deck? Btw, from your previous post, your little guy is getting big!
I really enjoyed this post - it is so great to have a "tour" around your garden, and it looks fab.

It's looking good! I have some really bare areas in my yard and try to be positive about them - thinking of the blank slate I have to work with! It's nice to be able to start from scratch and create exactly what you want.
Looks like you have plenty of sun to work with. I look forward to seeing the big picture(s) to come!
I think it all looks lovely. You have the imagination and creativity to create a beautiful and alive place all of your very own. Part of the fun is buying new flowers ever year to add to your ever changing pride and joy!!!
I don't think I would have the courage, to show a warts and all picture story of my garden yet. You would never read my blog again if you saw how many weeds I have been feeding the past 3 years! Think that will take a lot of years of hard slog before I am confident enough for that so really admire you for revealing such an intimate thing!!!!!
Thank you!
