Actually, I began harvesting the lettuce 'Gourmet Blend' and spinach 'Tyee Hybrid' a couple weeks ago but I'm just now getting the photos up. So is life. Oh how lovely it was to grab some fresh leaves just steps from our back door. I ate the salad with just a sprinkling of Chevre cheese and it was delicious.
Everything is coming along nicely in the veggie bed. Beets, arugula, radishes and peas are starting to fill up the space already and I continue to sing praises to all things square-foot gardening. I did notice that possibly every beet seed I planted seems to have sprouted. I can't stand the thought of eliminating them but wonder if I could achieve successful transplanting at this stage?
Carrots have sprung up with their crazy mops. These are planted in deeper soil this year, which I hope will reduce the crazy shapes that popped out of the ground last year.
The peas finally got a trellis for some much needed climbing. They were falling all over themselves and other nearby vegetables until I guided them over, under and through the trellis. Like the cloche structure, the trellis is constructed from PVC pipe -- up, over and down in an upside-down 'U' shape. Notice the colorful yarn? I couldn't find the twine.
Looks like my first attempt at radishes is having some success. I read you should harvest when they're between marble and Ping-Pong ball sized to enjoy a sweeter taste. When I was impatiently digging around the roots I noticed black ants emerging from the soil. I didn't notice any damage but does anyone have any thoughts on whether this is a problem?

I had the same problems with excellent germination (sounds wierd calling it a problem!) but managed to transplant some beetroot at that stage and most took ok. If not, it is just extra yummy salad leaves
Thanks for letting me know and for visiting. I'm going to transplant tomorrow during the little guy's nap then. Yay!
Hi Gardeness~~ I'm wondering if the ants are the teeny tiny sugar ants or large carpenter ants or something in between. For the past five years or so we've been seeing sugar ants. (By we, I mean people in this area.) It seems they're under every rock and they've made tiny mounds of soil in my rock garden. They're harmless but annoying.
Beautiful salad greens. You should be proud.
Hey, happy beginning of harvest time! You did great with your seeds. I have heard not to bother with beet transplanting, they don't like it, but looks like prue has had experience to disprove that. Hope it works, please let us know what happens! No idea on the ants, we have them too but haven't noticed them in among the veggies (yet).
Wow- you are eating out of your garden already! I am impressed. My lettuce is still only a dream although I can see it now. Enjoy!
Ants can be a problem, I sprinkle orange oil around the veggies because they don't like the smell of oranges and squirrels don't like it either.
Isn't it great when you can start to enjoy the veggies you've planted? Your peas seem to be growing quicker than ours. Salad greens with chevre... think we may just have some tonight!
